PSHE/RSHE at Fairlop
At Fairlop, PSHE/RHSE are fundamental aspects of our curriculum and children are given safe opportunities to discuss and explore current and relevant issues allowing them to take ownership of their learning and experiences. It is our expectation that PSHE/RSHE lessons provide a safe space to understand personal, social, health, relationships and economic skills, knowledge and understanding to enable children to navigate the world in which they live throughout childhood but also into adulthood.
Our PSHE/RSHE curriculum aims to teach and support children through key areas providing implicit learning opportunities to develop and deepen understandings about health and relationships. The aim is to give pupils the knowledge and capability to take care of themselves and receive support if problems arise. Our intent is to foster the pupil’s wellbeing and support the development of resilience and character - skills that we know are fundamental to pupils being happy, successful, and productive members of society.
The school has chosen to use materials from the 2simple wellbeing product ‘Dot Com Digital’ to deliver the majority of the RSHE syllabus. We believe that these materials provide comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum in an age-appropriate way. Dot Com Digital is delivered by the teaching staff during the school day and follows a series of lesson which provide children with the opportunity to discuss and reflect upon real life issues important to them in a safe place. The programme is based around a series of fictional characters; children will be able to explore the challenges that the characters face, reflect on how they overcome them and adopt these strategies in their own lives. Dot Com Digital aims to help prepare children for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of a successful adult life. The online programme’s content meets statutory guidance for England with regards to RSE Framework (2020). Additionally, Dot Com Digital supports the KCSIE guidance, SMSC and British values by providing a framework to deliver many of the requirements.
Curriculum Links
PSHE is at the centre of daily life within our school, providing opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a positive member of our community and society in line with our approach as a Rights Respecting School. There are strong links between our PSHE/RSHE and science curriculum in which the children are taught about parts of the body, how to take care of themselves and how their bodies grow and change over time. As part of our D&T curriculum, children are taught how to prepare healthy dishes, linking with the Health and Wellbeing aspect of our PSHE/RSHE curriculum. The discussions in lessons regularly support children to empathise and questions characters within the texts they are learning in English. The knowledge, skills and awareness children acquire across the school are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their understanding to reflect on and explore curriculum content in greater depth.
Outcomes
PSHE/RSHE outcomes are predominantly discussion based. Folders are used to collect samples of work throughout the year where appropriate. Assessment of children’s learning and progress is carried out through role play, drama, debates, children’s written work and verbal contributions to discussions.
The strong knowledge about children's rights, relationships, empathy and citizenship have led to the school achieving the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award, Silver: Rights Aware accreditation.
